For a SaaS team investing time on Reddit, it helps to know whether those conversations also reach people through AI search. You might answer a buying question today, yet the same thread could appear as a source in an AI recommendation months later.
We examined 78,115 replies from ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, and Claude to see how often they linked to Reddit. Then we looked at the age of the conversations cited by ChatGPT and Gemini. The results show both recent discussions and much older threads appearing as sources, with one striking absence in the Claude sample.
How often do AI answers cite Reddit?
Reddit appeared in 4,929 of 63,831 ChatGPT replies: 7.7%, or roughly one in 13. Gemini linked to Reddit in 7.1% of replies, and Grok's API replies did so in 10.0%. We found no Reddit links among the recorded sources in 3,164 Claude API replies.
| Engine | Replies examined | With a Reddit link | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 63,831 | 4,929 | 7.7% |
| Gemini | 10,025 | 707 | 7.1% |
| Grok via API | 1,095 | 109 | 10.0% |
| Claude via API | 3,164 | 0 | 0% |
This count includes links to individual conversations, subreddits, and other Reddit pages. An answer with five Reddit links still counts as one Reddit-linked answer. The thread-age sections below use only links that identify a particular conversation.
Why Claude's zero caught our attention
None of the 3,164 Claude API replies had a Reddit link among their recorded sources. Other websites did appear: 3,157 of those replies contained at least one recorded link. The sample covered 158 tracked prompts across three Claude model versions.
We also checked tracked prompts run on both Claude and ChatGPT on the same UTC day. In that subset, 208 of 1,463 ChatGPT replies linked to Reddit, compared with none of 1,891 Claude replies. The absence therefore persisted when we narrowed the comparison to shared questions and dates.
This makes the zero worth investigating. It describes Claude through our API setup, with web search requested; the consumer app and other prompts may produce different sources. The practical lesson is to check where each engine gets its answers before assuming that a Reddit strategy will reach buyers through all of them.
How old are the Reddit conversations ChatGPT cites?
The median thread age was about four months when ChatGPT linked to a conversation. Of the citations we could date, 58.0% pointed to threads at least three months old. Recent discussions also had a substantial presence: 21.5% were less than a month old.
We found identifiable conversation links in 4,523 ChatGPT replies, covering 833 distinct threads. After counting each thread once per reply, there were 5,621 thread appearances. Original-post dates were available for 5,461 of them, or 97.2%.
| Thread age when cited | Citations | Share of dated citations |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1 month | 1,174 | 21.5% |
| 1–2 months | 718 | 13.1% |
| 2–3 months | 400 | 7.3% |
| 3–4 months | 491 | 9.0% |
| 4–5 months | 330 | 6.0% |
| 5–6 months | 554 | 10.1% |
| 6–7 months | 295 | 5.4% |
| 7–8 months | 232 | 4.2% |
| 8–9 months | 200 | 3.7% |
| 9–10 months | 158 | 2.9% |
| 10–11 months | 104 | 1.9% |
| 11–12 months | 127 | 2.3% |
| 1–2 years | 593 | 10.9% |
| 2+ years | 85 | 1.6% |
The largest first-year bucket was under 1 month old, at 21.5%. The next largest was 1–2 months, at 13.1%. Older conversations were spread across the remaining months, with another 12.4% of dated citations pointing to threads at least a year old. For someone deciding which discussions to read, that is a reason to look beyond this week's posts.
How old are the Reddit conversations Gemini cites?
The median thread age was about eight months in Gemini's dated citations. 87.4% linked to conversations at least three months old, and 33.2% linked to threads at least a year old. Only 6.8% pointed to conversations less than a month old.
Gemini's 696 replies with identifiable thread links referred to 137 distinct conversations. Counting a thread once per reply produced 760 appearances, of which 737 could be dated, or 97.0%.
| Thread age when cited | Citations | Share of dated citations |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1 month | 50 | 6.8% |
| 1–2 months | 32 | 4.3% |
| 2–3 months | 11 | 1.5% |
| 3–4 months | 20 | 2.7% |
| 4–5 months | 30 | 4.1% |
| 5–6 months | 40 | 5.4% |
| 6–7 months | 67 | 9.1% |
| 7–8 months | 93 | 12.6% |
| 8–9 months | 84 | 11.4% |
| 9–10 months | 12 | 1.6% |
| 10–11 months | 23 | 3.1% |
| 11–12 months | 30 | 4.1% |
| 1–2 years | 238 | 32.3% |
| 2+ years | 7 | 0.9% |
Gemini's largest first-year bucket was 7–8 months, at 12.6%, followed by 8–9 months at 11.4%. Its recorded sources were older in this collection. The two age samples cover different questions and periods, so the gap does not establish a general preference for older posts. What both show is that a Reddit conversation can appear in an AI answer months after it begins.
What this means for your Reddit strategy
Look for relevant conversations at both ends of the age range. New questions give you an opportunity to help while the discussion is active. Older threads are worth reviewing when they already appear in answers to your buyers' questions.
- Start with a real buying question. Track the category and use-case questions prospective customers ask. Our guide to choosing AI visibility prompts explains how to build that list.
- Read the conversations appearing as sources. Check which products, requirements, and trade-offs people discuss. A recurring question may suggest a useful reply, a clearer comparison page, or a missing piece of documentation.
- Check activity as well as age. An old thread can contain a new question or a recent correction. Review the comments and current facts before deciding whether there is something useful to contribute. Follow the community's rules and disclose your connection when discussing your product.
- Keep tracking the answers. Check whether your brand appears, how it is described, and which sources are linked. A citation and a product recommendation are different outcomes.
Clare brings thread citation counts, creation age, recent activity, and brand mentions into one report. You can move from a buyer question to the discussions behind its recorded answers and identify a specific piece of work.
Our Reddit share of voice study looks at the related question of whether more brand mentions on Reddit correspond to more appearances in AI answers. Use the actual answers to judge visibility, then use their sources to decide what to investigate.
How we counted replies and thread ages
The four-engine sample contains 78,115 recorded replies from June 1 through October 26, 2026, with a fixed cutoff at 03:10:27.270 UTC on October 26. It includes repeated monitoring runs across different prompts and model versions. ChatGPT and Gemini were captured from their web interfaces; Grok and Claude were accessed through API calls with web search requested. We excluded replies without an identifiable engine and separate OpenAI API calls.
For citation frequency, we counted a reply once if its recorded links contained a Reddit URL, including Reddit subdomains. Recorded links use provider-supplied source URLs where available, otherwise hyperlinks extracted from the answer. These links show which pages were recorded as sources; they do not establish which comments a system read or what caused its recommendation.
For thread age, we grouped conversation and comment links by thread ID and counted each thread once per reply. We subtracted the original post's creation time from the answer's timestamp. Month labels use 30-day intervals, with the final first-year interval extending to day 365. Older threads are grouped into 1–2 years and 2+ years. This measures the age of the original post, rather than a particular comment, edit, or the conversation's latest activity.
Original-post dates were available for 787 ChatGPT-linked threads and 129 Gemini-linked threads. We excluded 160 undated ChatGPT appearances and 23 undated Gemini appearances from the age percentages. Counting each dated thread only once, at its first observed citation, gave median ages of about four months for ChatGPT and seven months for Gemini. Older conversations therefore remained common after removing repeated citations to the same thread.
The Claude comparison used tracked prompts with answers from both systems on the same UTC date: 936 shared prompt-and-day combinations for ChatGPT and Claude. The number of runs per prompt still differed. These are observations from a monitoring collection, not a randomized test of engine preferences or the effect of posting on Reddit.
